St Nicholas' Church, Compton

The tower of the church of St Nicholas in Compton, Surrey predates the conquest, but most of the nave and chancel is 12th century. It is the only church in the country to have a two-storey sanctuary. The chequerboard painting above the chancel arch would have formed a backdrop to the rood.
