Built in the 1880s, Electric Avenue was the first street market to be lit by electric lights. The elegant Victorian canopies over the pavements survived until the 1980s but were unfortunately removed. The street was made famous by Eddy Grant’s 1983 single Electric Avenue, which reached number 2 in both the UK and US singles charts.
