{"id":1097,"date":"2015-01-08T16:12:32","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T16:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=1097"},"modified":"2018-03-26T16:05:28","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T16:05:28","slug":"morwenstow-and-kilkhampton-churches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/wordpress\/2015\/01\/08\/morwenstow-and-kilkhampton-churches\/","title":{"rendered":"Morwenstow and Kilkhampton Churches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week I drove up to the very north of Cornwall to photograph and make 360\u00b0 panoramas of the churches at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/panoramas\/cornwall\/morwenstow.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Morwenstow<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/panoramas\/cornwall\/kilkhampton.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Kilkhampton<\/a>. They have some of the earliest features still to be seen on any Cornish church, both having Norman arches to the south door. In the case of Morwenstow a second Norman arch (reused from another church) was added when the porch was built, probably in the 15th century. Three bays of the north aisle also have Norman arches with zig-zag moulding.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/panoramas\/cornwall\/morwenstow.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Morwenstow.jpg\" alt=\"Morwenstow Church\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1099\" width=\"448\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->From 1834 to 1875 Morwenstow was the parish of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Stephen_Hawker\" rel=\"noopener\">Reverend Robert S Hawker<\/a> who wrote what has become known as the Cornish Anthem, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Song_of_the_Western_Men\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>&#8216;The Song of the Western Men&#8217;<\/em><\/a> (also known as <em>&#8216;Trelawny&#8217;<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Song of the Western Men<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A good sword and a trusty hand!<br \/>\nA merry heart and true!<br \/>\nKing James\u2019s men shall understand<br \/>\nWhat Cornish lads can do!<\/p>\n<p>And have they fixed the where and when?<br \/>\nAnd shall Trelawny die?<br \/>\nHere\u2019s twenty thousand Cornish men<br \/>\nWill know the reason why!<\/p>\n<p>Out spake their Captain brave and bold:<br \/>\nA merry wight was he:-<br \/>\n\u201cIf London Tower was Michael\u2019s hold,<br \/>\nWe\u2019d set Trelawny free!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll cross the Tamar, land to land:<br \/>\nThe Severn is no stay:<br \/>\nWith \u2018one and all,\u2019 and hand in hand;<br \/>\nAnd who shall bid us nay?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when we come to London Wall,<br \/>\nA pleasant sight to view,<br \/>\nCome forth! come forth! ye cowards all:<br \/>\nHere\u2019s men as good as you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrelawny he\u2019s in keep and hold:<br \/>\nTrelawny he may die:<br \/>\nBut here\u2019s twenty thousand Cornish bold<br \/>\nWill know the reason why!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/panoramas\/cornwall\/kilkhampton.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/reeddesign.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Kilkhampton.jpg\" alt=\"Kilkhampton Church\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1098\" width=\"448\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kilkhampton has a great collection of over 150 bench ends with religious or heraldic imagery.
